In this article from the Hosts Library, Amer — one of the early Saudi hosts in the vacation rental sector — shares his analytical insights on the evolution of this industry since the launch of the tourist visa in 2019, and how regulations and local platforms have paved the way for tourism investment and achieving Vision 2030 objectives.

The Beginnings of Tourism in Saudi Arabia

The launch of the "Welcome to Arabia" campaign in 2019 coincided with the implementation of the tourist visa, which opened the door for the world to discover the Kingdom as a new tourism destination.

With this direction, the Ministry of Tourism focused on building an integrated ecosystem that supports investors and creates an attractive environment for both visitors and hosts.

The Birth of Private Hospitality (Vacation Rentals)

With the support of the Ministry of Tourism, Gathern platform launched as the first licensed Saudi platform serving the vacation rental sector, inspired by the global home-sharing model.

This model enabled hosts to rent out parts of their properties and offer unique local experiences, contributing to the spread of this new hospitality format.

Regulations and Building Trust

The issuance of the Private Tourist Hospitality Facility License was a turning point, providing the sector with a clear regulatory framework and enhancing trust between hosts and guests.

This step provided alternative solutions, especially during high-demand seasons, and inspired other local companies to develop similar platforms.

Looking Toward the Future

Today — in 2025 — the sector stands at a new phase with major events approaching, completing the vision targeted by Vision 2030.

The question remains:

What is the mature model that the Ministry of Tourism envisions for this sector?

And how do we increase enthusiasm among investors and hosts to create comprehensive Saudi experiences?

Our Role as Hosts and Operators

Despite the clarity of government efforts in enablement and support, the role of hosts and operators is equally important.

We have a responsibility to elevate the quality of the experience and enhance operational professionalism, to be part of the rapid growth of this promising sector.
